But Brachvogel reversed the chronology of Friede's career having him quit his job in Halle and then talking that decision over with his father. In reality, his father had been dead 14 years or so before Friede walked off the job. Also, he never became an impoverished actor, as the book/film show. He stayed a fairly impoverished musician throughout his life.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09722498474500576200noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38560481.post-88528705375600052382013-10-01T13:48:02.511-04:002013-10-01T13:48:02.511-04:00I actually used to work with someone who used to w...I actually used to work with someone who used to work with her at the Globe and Mail.

He would speak reverentially about how she was able to produce so many columns, and how nearly none of them needed editing.

I could only reply that both these qualities, based on my reading of her, seemed completely accuate when you looked at the quality of her work.Andrew W.https://www.blogger.com/profile/00071098030747838202noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38560481.post-228417635249104572013-10-01T11:50:18.427-04:002013-10-01T11:50:18.427-04:00Actually, Wente is not the product of the any educ...Actually, Wente is not the product of the any educational system in Canada. The language I've been trying to learn of late is ASL (sign language), and after a number of (live, in-person) courses, a couple of things are painfully clear:

1. trying to think in a language other than your own is physically exhausting - if you are doing it right, you're wearing out your brain, and the people using google translate aren't getting that;

2. doing well in a testing environment is not the same as doing well in the real world. In my most recent course, after a week of immersion in the language, we were given a week to video & send in our final exam. My YouTube video was great. I got great marks for it. But despite doing well in a muc-rehearsed video with many re-takes, I still stumble and am overwhelmed in an actual conversation with a native speaker, because language is about communication, and communication is about meeting face-to-face. Making a video is not a reliable method of learning or testing at all.

I imagine that most MOOC students will have a bit of a rude awakening if confronted with a real-life situation where they need to use and understnad the language they have "learned."Jenniferhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00817560468306392289noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38560481.post-6839305326317503882012-12-13T14:44:45.842-05:002012-12-13T14:44:45.842-05:00the doctor and the pencil? http://gifsoup.com/webr...the doctor and the pencil? http://gifsoup.com/webroot/animatedgifs3/3885543_o.gifMarlohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17430966424552907859noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38560481.post-38729652907727027752012-12-13T02:29:26.587-05:002012-12-13T02:29:26.587-05:00If it makes you feel any better, Henze came up in ...If it makes you feel any better, Henze came up in one of the symposium papers last weekend.
